Exercise

1. Question. (a) Which kind of garbage is not converted into compost by the red worms?
                     (b) Have you seen any other organism besides red worms, in you pit? if yes, try to  find out their names. Draw picture of these.


Answer. (a) plastic bags, tins, bottles, glass, aluminum foils, broken bangles.
              (b) Sometimes we do see small insects, bugs, beetles, spiders. Then there are microorganisms too.



2. Question. Discuss:
(a) Is garbage disposal the responsibility only of the government?
(b) Is it possible to reduce the problems relating to disposal of garbage?


Answer. (a) No, it is our responsibility also. We should use and reduce on grabage. We should use ans reuse 
                  the thing before throw it.
             (b) Yes, it is possible to reduce the problem relating to disposal of garbage by using re-cycle able       materials.

3. Question. (a) what do you do with the left over food at home?
                   (b) If you and your friend are given the choice of eating in a plastic  plate or a  banana leaf platter at  a party, which one would you prefer and why?


Answer.      (a)
                   (i)Pre serve properly and reuse.
                   (ii) Convert it to some other food preparation and consume.
          
                 (b) Banana leaf platter, because.
                 (i)   easy disposal,
                 (ii)  easy be recycled,
                (iii) more environment-friendly.

4.Question.
            (a)  Collect pieces of different kinds of paper. find out which of these can be recycled.     
           (b)  With the help of a lens look at the piece of paper you collected for the above question, see any difference in the material of recycled paper and new sheet of paper?


Answer. (a) Except plastic paper, all other papers can be recycled.
              (b) Recycled paper is more thick and more rough as compared to new sheet paper.

            
5.Question. (a) Collect different kinds of packaging material. What was the purpose for with each one was used? discuss in  groups.
                    (b) Give an example in which packaging could have been reduced.
Answer. (a)
               (i) Paper packet   __     light food items.
              (ii) Card board    ___    crockery.  
              (iii) Plastic covers __    cloths,dresses.
              (iv) Glass covers   __    shoe piece.    
              (vi) Wooden boxes  ___    delicate items.
         
            (b) Cloths,dresses.


6. Question. Do you think it is better to use compost instead of chemical fertilisers? Why?
Answer. (i) Yes, it is better to use compost instead of chemical fertilisers.          
              (ii) By using compost, we are reusing our garbage.
